Effort minimised – speed and reliability maximised
Greiner Bio-One, technology partner for the diagnostics and pharmaceuticals industry, presents CarnoCheck® high sensitive and the CarnoRapid™ quick test – two new products that result from the continuing development of the well-established CarnoCheck® DNA test kit. The last few years have seen a constant sharpening of sourcing checks and testing of various types of animal to prevent food scandals such as the undeclared use of horse meat in future. These two new tests can rapidly and reliably identify up to eight types of animal.
CarnoRapid™ – entry-level quick test
With its broad test spectrum and ease of use, the CarnoRapid™ test is the perfect system for small laboratories in meat-producing companies, for example, who need a reliable test for in-coming goods. The innovative lateral-flow DNA chip can detect eight different animal types in raw, cooked or conserved foodstuffs down to a weight proportion of between 0.01 and 1 per cent (depending on type of animal and level of processing). The CarnoRapid™ kit contains all the components for the quick and easy extraction of samples, a Multiplex PCR Mastermix for repro-ducing the species-specific DNA and 48 lateral-flow DNA chips. Once the DNA has been repro-duced, the analysis procedure on the chip takes just ten minutes and can be conducted by even the smallest of laboratories with minimal equipment. The qualitative evidence of all eight species is given through hybridisation and dying of the PCR products on the CarnoRapid™ chip. A positive result is shown by a visible line on the CarnoRapid™ chip for each species detected.
CarnoCheck® high sensitive – clever testing
CarnoCheck® high sensitive enables the highly sensitive qualitative detection of eight animal types in raw, cooked or conserved foodstuffs. Pork, beef, sheep, goat and chicken can be detected down to a weight proportion of 0.01 per cent, and horse, donkey and turkey down to 0.1 per cent. The reliability of the analysis has been tested using a wide range of products including sausages, soups, stock cubes, cheese, yoghurt, butter, curd cheese, lasagne, cat food and dog food.
CarnoCheck® high sensitive is primarily aimed at large food-testing laboratories specialising in animal species testing with medium to high throughput. Six or twelve analyses can be carried out at the same time on one chip using microarray analysis. Each microarray contains several speciesspecific probes and a sophisticated system of internal and external checks that make CarnoCheck® high sensitive an extremely reliable detection system. The automatic digital analysis and report generation feature provides even greater product reliability, as this virtually eliminates the possibility of false-positive and false-negative results.
Manual steps minimised – speed and reliability maximised
The two tests are not only fast, they are also user-friendly, because the number of manual steps is minimal. Sample preparation is done using a specially developed fast extraction process – samples are ready for use in the PCR in just six easy steps, five minutes of hands-on time and a 25-minute incubation period.

Greiner Bio-One Diagnostics Division
The Greiner Bio-One Diagnostics Division develops, produces and markets products for human diagnostics, biopharmaceutical production and the food industry as well as OEM products for dental and veterinary medicine. The “oCheck” diagnostic product familiy meet requirements for both mass analysis (high-throughput screening) and individual analysis for acute diagnostics. These testing methods can be used for vaccine safety, identifying hospital acquired infections and sexually transmitted disease. The company’s headquarters are in Rainbach (Austria) and the sales and marketing facilities are located in Frickenhausen (Germany).
