In the first quarter of 2023, Greiner Bio-One put two new photovoltaic plants into operation at its production sites in Upper Austria. With these plants, the company is taking an important step towards climate neutrality and achieving its sustainability goals.

Kremsmünster, March 2023 – In the first quarter of 2023, the medical device manufacturer Greiner Bio-One put two new photovoltaic plants into operation at its production sites in Kremsmünster and Rainbach in Upper Austria. In this way, the company is investing in sustainably produced energy and taking another important step towards achieving its sustainability goals.

600 new solar panels have recently started producing electricity

The two newly constructed photovoltaic plants together consist of 600 solar panels with an area of around 1,100 m². Solar radiation is converted into electrical energy by solar cells. The energy produced by the two plants is equivalent to the electricity needs of around 56 four-person households.

“As a global company, it is very important to us that we minimize our impact on the environment and habitats as far as possible. That is why we are pursuing concrete goals for the use of renewable energy sources.”

Rainer Perneker, CEO of Greiner Bio-One International GmbH

Renewable electricity targets
Greiner Bio-One is focusing on increasing the use of renewable energy sources and expanding the use of self-produced energy. The company aims to increase its proportion of self-generated electricity worldwide to 1.5% of electricity consumption by 2025. The energy produced by the two new plants will cover approx. 0.5% of the site electricity requirements at the headquarters in Kremsmünster and approx. 1.8% of requirements at the Rainbach site.

“We are constantly striving optimise the use of energy for the operation of our infrastructure through energy efficiency measures and to further increase the proportion of green electricity.”

The company also sets targets for electricity purchasing and aims to increase its share of electricity from renewable energy sources worldwide to 80% by 2025. The Austrian and German sites already use 100% certified green electricity and therefore produce their products with clean and renewable energy.

Additional photovoltaic plants at international locations
Greiner Bio-One has been producing its own electricity from renewable energy sources since 2020. The Alphen aan der Rijn (NL) sales site recently expanded its photovoltaic plant and, from 2023, will produce up to around 80% of its energy requirements for its office premises and warehouses itself. In September 2021, the sterilization service provider Mediscan put another photovoltaic plant into operation at its Kremsmünster site (AT).

The energy generated by the plant covers around one fifth of the high energy requirements for the sterilization process. The third plant was installed in Frickenhausen (DE) in July 2022. The plants at these three locations cover the equivalent of the electricity needs of around 150 four-person households. The installation of further photovoltaic plants is planned at several locations in Europe and South America.
