Reliable identification of frozen samples
Frickenhausen, [April 24th, 2009] – Greiner Bio-One GmbH is unveiling its new Datamatrix coding service for Cryo.s freezing vials at the 15th Annual Conference and Exhibition of the Society for Biomolecular Sciences, SBS, taking place in Lille, France, from 26 to 30 April. The test tube identification number encrypted in 2D code can be used to give each frozen sample a unique, machine-readable identity and store sample-related information in a database.
Handling and managing large numbers of samples, such as cell extracts and vital cells, is a major part of a laboratory’s day-to-day work. Labelling is essential to ensure precise identification of each individual sample and there is a whole range of methods available to do this. Manual labelling of small vessels such as freezing vials has the disadvantage that often only a very limited volume of information can be stored. In some cases, samples can no longer be clearly identified as labels become smudged and unreadable.
The linear barcode for identifying test tubes has been available from Greiner Bio-One for a number of years. It has proven to facilitate sample identification and day-to-day work of a whole range of laboratories. To make sample handling even more reliable and convenient,

Greiner Bio-One is now unveiling its enhanced coding service for its Cryo.s freezing vials. A laser is used to burn two-dimensional barcodes, known as Datamatrix codes, into the plastic base of the vials. The small white symbols on a black background have a high data capacity and can be used to save and process sample-related information on the origin, type and age of a sample. The customised universal sequence of characters or fixed codes can be read using any standard 2D barcode scanner and integrated with the relevant sample data. Each sample is therefore given a unique, machine-readable identity. The codes offer a high level of data reliability as they are resistant to mechanical stress, low storage temperatures and most solvents. In addition, an automatic error-correction algorithm, which also makes partly damaged codes readable, ensures all information can be accessed at any time.
